Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Tech Advances in Healthcare Workplaces Are Wins for Patients In the U.S., healthcare is big business, representing about a sixth of the nation’s GDP. And it’s no secret that healthcare providers have been heavily incentivized by the government to adopt better technology. No less than $30 billion has been set aside over the last few years so that hospitals and health systems can operate more efficiently and patients can receive better care. Considering this massive influx of cash, everyone hoped that all providers would immediately enter the 21st century, becoming fully digital so that patient information could easily flow from one system to another. Unfortunately, this wasn’t exactly what happened, because while some organizations benefited from the government funding, others did not. Specifically, providers in the realms of behavioral health, skilled nursing, long-term care, and rehabilitation were left behind, and the disconnect between the technology “haves” and “have nots” continued to grow. Here’s a typical example. A patient receives surgery in a hospital, and is then discharged for continuing recovery at a skilled nursing facility. The skilled nursing facility does not have an easy way to receive electronic records, so the patient’s hospital-based physician has to fax them. Think about this â€" a robot was in the operating room performing the surgery, yet a fax machine must transmit the results of that surgery. Such is life in the modern world of American healthcare. In both workplaces, this paper-based transmission causes much time to be wasted, and inevitable confusion to occur. The hospital presumably learned a great deal about our patient while she was being cared for there â€" including allergies, sensitivities, and problem triggers â€" and if the patient is lucky, some of that might make it over to the skilled nursing facility. Also, the lack of connectivity means that the billing and reimbursement processes will incur more errors â€" increasing costs for everyone. Jon Elwell, CEO of Kno2, a healthcare cloud service provider, attempted to resolve these issues by creating an online system that allows medical professionals to access patient records from their desktops. Elwell joined forces with my partner Xerox to build a solution facilitating the secure and compliant exchange of records between different types of healthcare organizations. Now, healthcare organizations willing to invest in a printer can join the ranks of the fully digitized. “Using the Xerox multifunction printer (MFP), a healthcare professional can walk up to the machine as usual and scan in any paper records to send to another provider,” said Elwell. “Once documents are in the system, they are instantly delivered to its destination in a secure, electronic, EMR friendly format via a comprehensive national directory of healthcare providers. And anyone in that network can quickly send information back. A dramatic improvement to the traditional fax process that would typically be utilized prior to the creation of the Xerox healthcare MFP.” The MFP is part of Xerox’s new suite of 14 Xerox ConnectKey-enabled devices, all of which are equipped withapps designed to speed up paper-dependent business processes and make it easier for users to collaborate and work more effectively. Apps loaded on the Xerox ConnectKey-enabled devices can also be customized to meet industry-specific regulations and workflows so that every vertical can reap the benefits for digitization and automation. Thanks to these powerful advances in interoperability, cloud services, and the Internet of Things, healthcare workflow is about to get a whole lot easier and more productive so that healthcare staff can spend more time helping patients and less time troubleshooting information gaps. And the best part is, updates are continuously made to the system. So in other words, Xerox and Kno2 will worry about HIPAA compliance and ever evolving regulatory standards so busy professionals don’t have to.

Seven reasons why you should use the Careers Skills Service… 1) Careers advice and guidance The careers consultants are objective and the discussions are confidential. Their role is to provide the information and guidance to help you to make informed and realistic decisions. Don’t worry if you do not have a career plan or even know where to start, the discussion is your agenda and based on your needs. You might only be in your first year but if you already have the passion to add original and significant knowledge in your subject you may want to pursue a PhD after graduation. An  Undergraduate Research Support Scheme  placement (typically in the summer of your 2nd or 3rd year of study) is a great way to experience the rewards and challenges of research. You will have the opportunity to participate in active research, working with an academic supervisor. Even if you ultimately decide postgraduate study isn’t for you, the skills and experiences gained on URSS can show a potential employer your transferable employability skills. 7) Get experience and develop your employability Employability. Remember it. A word you will become very familiar with during your time at Warwick. Essentially it is the ability to demonstrate the ‘softer’ skills all employers require. A good academic record is obviously important but for a significant number of top graduate recruiters  employability skills are just as important. You can convincingly demonstrate these skills by gaining experience. The Careers Skills Internship Development Team work with employers to source placements for the summer internship programme   over 100 such opportunities were created in 2018. If you find your own short term work experience placement and it is unpaid you can apply for a bursary   if the placement is in a competitive, traditionally hard to access sector such as heritage or advertising, for example, these bursaries can be up to £60 per day. The End of the Al and Tipper Gore Career Brand As a kid growing up in the 70s, a lot of the pop culture I embraced revolved around famous people who were married and worked together. I watched Sonny Cher, sang the number one hit song by Captain Tennille incessantly, watched every I Love Lucy re-run I could sandwich in between homework, and wowed at the husband and wife team of Bela and Marta Karolyi as I watched Nadia Comaneci score those perfect tens.I didnt realize it, but these couples were not just icons to me; they were powerful career brands. At the time, Desi needed Lucy, Sonny needed Cher, and Im pretty sure Captain wouldnt have lasted long without Tennille. I started noticing that politicians and their wives seemed to also always be linked in the media and even though the presidents were the most talked about on television or in the news, there was always footage of them with their wives campaigning for them or supporting a cause and they were truly part of the presidential brand.So when I heard the news about Al and T ipper Gore splitting up after 40 years of marriage, it reminded me of their career brand and how Tippers activism influenced the Al Gore brand and vice-versa. Its hard to think of one without the other. But just like Lucy and Desi and Sonny and Cher split and went on to establish their own independent career brands, I suppose in time Al and Tipper will do the same. Oh well; at least Captain and Tennille (and Bela and Martas) love are still keeping them and their career brands together.What do you think about husbands and wives as business partners? With a little preparation and the right attitude, you can turn festive occasions into opportunities for you to meet new allies for your job search. Follow these tips to turn your not-working into effective networking. Self-assess. Know what job you want; be specific and targeted. Identify companies where youd like to work and be prepared to mention several organizations names. Do not plan to be the I can do anything job seeker. Learn how to introduce yourself. Weve all heard of the two-minute elevator speech. Research the guest list. Its always best to be prepared, and when you do a little sleuthing, its not difficult to find out who plans to be at the event. Keep in mind: you want to identify people who could know someone working at your targeted list of companies. Be aware: these networking contacts may come in surprising packages. For example, the neighborhood busy-body probably has all kinds of great contacts. So does the bartender at your neighborhood pubâ€"or the person tending bar at the party youre attending. Dont cross anyone off your list of good people to meet. Create snazzy business cards. Even if youre not currently working, you should have professional looking business cards that give the recipient easy access to your social media profiles (for example, your LinkedIn URL). Dress the part. Even if its a casual party, make sure to choose something to wear that looks sharp and in style. Be a listener. Make sure people dont sense that you have an agenda when you meet them. Ask for a follow-up meeting. Use your in-person networking time to request another meeting in a quieter location. For example, if youve had a great talk, and you think there is potential for you to be able to help each other, say, Id love to follow up with you and explore how we may be able to be good resources for each other. Say thank youâ€"and good bye. Dont forget your manners. Be sure to thank the party organizer, even if you have to stand around to have an audience. Keep in touch. Depending on the nature of your interactions at the party, you have a lot of options for following up.
